How to Use Lavender Exfoliating Body Scrub

Although sugar is a gentle exfoliant, it’s still important to use homemade scrubs properly to avoid skin irritation.

  1. Run warm water over your hands and whichever dry patch of your body you want to exfoliate.
  2. Add a scoop of lavender body scrub to your hands.
  3. Gently rub the sugar over your body in a circular motion.
  4. Rinse and let your body air dry or pat it dry with a clean towel.

This scrub is gentle enough for daily use, but I prefer to use it once a week as a body scrub.

Be careful using this scrub on sensitive areas. I don’t typically recommend using scrubs on your face as they can be too harsh.

Equipment

You just need a small bowl, a spoon, and a glass jar to make a batch of this lavender sugar body scrub. No fancy tools required!

If you’re making this for gifts, it can be helper to gather some smaller jars (quarter pints or 4 oz jars) and a canning funnel for easy packing.

Ingredients

  • Sugar:It wouldn’t be a sugar scrub without sugar! I prefer to use regular white sugar from the grocery store as the granules are small and it’s so affordable.
  • Sweet almond oil:Although you can use a variety of other carrier oils, I prefer to use sweet almond oil for its gentle, hydrating properties. Some good alternatives include olive oil, fractionated coconut oil or regular coconut oil, or jojoba oil.
  • Lavender essential oil:To add the fragrance of lavender to your sugar scrub, you’ll need to use lavender oil. I like to use these oils from a lavender farm near me but feel free to use your favorite essential oils.
  • Dried lavender buds:You can either buy dried lavender online or at a store or you can dry fresh lavender from your garden!

Storing

For best results, store this homemade body scrub recipe in an airtight container, like a glass jar, in a cool, dry place at room temperature. If left open, the sugar can crystallize and harden.

Some people like to add vitamin E oil to their homemade scrubs as a preservative. Since I like to use my scrubs quickly, I skip this step knowing that I should use the jar within a few weeks.

I prefer to use a glass jar since we have so many on hand due to canning. However, you may want to use a plastic tub if you are using this DIY sugar scrub recipe in the shower.

Tips

  • Add purple food coloring:If you want a purple hue to match the lavender, add a few drops of food coloring until you reach your desired shade of purple.
  • Make a salt scrub: Replace the sugar with either Epsom salts or sea salt for a homemade salt scrub. Be sure to use fine grain salt to avoid skin irritation.
  • Use brown sugar:For a darker color and a softer scrub, replace the white sugar with brown sugar and make a lavender brown sugar scrub.
  • Add more herbs & oil:Dip into your herb garden and clip a sprig of rosemary or a few drops of rosemary oil for an aromatic combination.
  • Adjust to your liking: Prefer a softer scrub? Add more oil? Like things a little dry? Add less! It’s up to you!

FAQs

Can you make lavender sugar scrub with fresh lavender?

Yes! Since the fresh flowers are high in moisture and oil, you can either use only lavender buds and no essential oil or combine a mix of the two. I’d recommend using about 1/4 cup of fresh lavender buds and 5-10 drops of lavender essential oil if you’d like. Since the flowers are fresh, they won’t last as long. You may want to store your scrub in the fridge to extend its freshness.

How can you make a big batch of lavender sugar scrub?

If you want to give this DIY body scrub as a gift this year, you’ll need to make more than one jar! Get yourself a large bowl and multiply the ingredients by the number of jars you want to fill.

This simple recipe makes one half-pint or two quarter-pints. If you want to use the smaller quarter-pint jars, you’ll need to double the amount of jars.

For example, if you want to make 5 batches of this recipe, you would need:
5 half pint jars or 10 quarter pints
5 cups of sugar
2.5 cups oil
10 TBS dried lavender flowers (just over 1/2 cup)
50-75 drops of lavender essential oil
