I’ve had a love affair with lavender ever since a neighbor gifted me a wonderful lavender-scented spray with essential oils. At the time, I was (very) pregnant with twin boys, so I needed all the relaxation tools I could get!

Fast forward to today, and I’m now facing a different kind of insomnia…from late-night screen time and full-time mommy-ing. If this sounds like you, give this simple recipe a whirl. It makes enough to keep some for yourself and share some with friends. (Or not share at all.)

Benefits of Lavender

If you’ve seen DIY Lavender and Rice Heating Pads or Lavender Lemonade Recipe, you know that my fixation with lavender comes from its many health benefits.

According to Medical News Today, lavender has medicinal benefits in treating anxiety, hair loss, and fungal infections, to name a few. In my experience, lavender has the unique ability to create a sense of calm and relaxation. Nothing helps me get to sleep better!

You have the option of using almond oil or olive oil as a substitute, though the color and scent of the sugar scrub may change based on the oil base you choose. You can also experiment with making a brown sugar scrub instead of using white sugar.

Lavender Scrub Recipe Notes

Ingredient Ratios

For this sugar scrub recipe, you can vary the ratio of sugar to coconut oil depending on your preference. I started with about 1½ cups of sugar to ½ cup of coconut oil, but you can increase the sugar for a thicker consistency or add more coconut oil as necessary.

This DIY body scrub is guaranteed to leave your dry skin feeling silky smooth. The sugar and dried lavender buds in this recipe ensure that the scrub both exfoliates and moisturizes as you rub it on your skin.

Tip: For more exfoliation, increase the ratio of sugar and lavender buds to coconut oil.

How to Use Your Scrub

This DIY sugar scrub recipe can be used on the face, hands, feet, or body.

I particularly like to use this to remove dead skin or calluses on my feet or to soothe my hands after a long day of crafting or working the yard.

After applying your scrub, rinse in warm water to remove any excess sugar or lavender pieces.

If you plan on using this as a DIY body scrub, you might want to increase your batch size by doubling or tripling this recipe. While I used 8-ounce wide-mouth mason jars in my tutorial, any glass jar will work.

You may also find it helpful to use this scrub on your hands at night and wear cotton sleeping gloves to further moisturize while you sleep. This also prevents any oils from staining your sheets.

Be aware of any allergies to coconut or lavender before gifting this to someone. (I always like to include an ingredient list on products like this, just to play it safe.)

Coconut Oil Preparation

Since coconut oil typically comes in solid form, you’ll need to pre-heat the oil in a microwave (about 30 seconds, in 10-second intervals) and keep it at room temperature before mixing it with the remaining ingredients.

Other Recipe Variations

You have many options to add/substitute other ingredients in this recipe. Try experimenting with other essential oils to make lemon sugar scrub, eucalyptus scrub, or citrus scrub. I especially love making this peppermint sugar scrub around the holidays and Valentine’s Day.

Aloe vera gel is another great addition to this recipe, especially if you’re trying to treat a nasty sunburn or skin irritation.

You can also feel free to add food coloring if you have a particular theme in mind.
