A puppy is an investment — of time, care and money. While there are many financial aspects to owning a dog — including food, pet insurance and the cost of ongoing veterinary care — the initial cost of purchasing a dog can be significant. If you decide to buy a puppy from a pet store or a responsible breeder, the price may be substantial. More so, high demand for furry companions during the COVID-19 pandemic has driven up dog prices.
To help you choose a puppy that fits your unique breed preferences and budget, we at the MarketWatch Guides team created a comprehensive guide to how puppy prices differ from breed to breed. We started by compiling a list of dog breeds from the American Kennel Club’s (AKC) official list. Next, we calculated the average price for each breed after analyzing thousands of ads on PuppyFinder. We then ranked the breeds by price overall and within each size group.
