Welcome to day 2 of the cookie bake-off!I'm sharing a cookie recipe that my Mom always makes every year around Christmas time. She gets together with her friend and they spend a whole day baking and Spritz Cookies are one of the main cookies they bake. I sometimes go and help them bake but this year I was in the middle of moving and I wish I would have been there to help. Next year!

What is a Spritz Cookie?

A spritz cookie is a pressed cookie made with a cookie a press. The cookie dough is a lot similar to that of a rolled sugar cookie. With sugar cookies, the dough is rolled out and a cookie cutter is used to shape them. What is a cookie press you might ask? I thought this video below I found on youtube does a good job at explaining how to use one.

I like this Sugar Cookie Press: Oxo Good Grips Press

Decorating Spritz Cookies

The ones you see in the picture are kind of plain but they are very festive looking with the red and green food coloring. When it comes to decorating a cookie, cupcake, or cake I struggle with this. I have no imagination when it comes to decorating. I watch those videos on Facebook or Youtube and see people make these very gorgeous decorated cookies and it makes me wish I could do that.

Maybe that should be a goal of mine for next year? Well anyways... you could use red, multi-colored, or green sprinkles. Dip the spritz cookies in chocolate, or place a gumdrop in the middle. I would check out Pinterest to see what other people have done for decorating cookies. There are some pretty nice blue snowflakes on there and they piped icing on them to make them look super pretty!

Baking Equipment

These are common baking tools every baker should have during the Holidays.

Rectangle Steel Sheet Pan - No matter what you're making, the durable non-stick and scratch-resistant coating on our cake pans allows your food to slide or pop out easily, making cleanup almost effortless. Non-stick bakeware sets are a must-have for busy cooks

Glass Mixing Bowls - This set includes different sized glass bowls for all your baking and mixing needs.

Cooling Racks - For those who love to bake but have limited space, this three-tiered Wilton cooling rack just solved that problem; cool batches of cookies, cake layers or countless finger foods all at once without sacrificing counter space

Best Baking Tips

  • Room temperature butter is key, let it sit out on the counter for a couple of hours before baking.
  • Read the recipe over a few times before baking or look up videos to see how it’s done properly.
  • Get an Oven Thermometer - Not every oven is the same. Keep an oven thermometer inside to make sure the oven is at the proper temperature. Wondering why your cookies or baked goods didn’t get done? This might be the reason why.
  • Don’t peek at whatever is baking in the oven! This lets out warm air.
  • Always combine the wet ingredients together in a separate bowl and the dry ingredients in another bowl. Slowly incorporate them together.
  • Have any more baking tips? Let me know in the comments below.

Storage Tips

Always store leftovers in clean, food-grade containers. The type of container doesn’t really matter. Use zip lock, glass, plastic, whatever! Just make sure the food is sealed tight before storing in the fridge or freezer.

Should spritz cookie dough be sticky? ›

Press cookies out directly onto ungreased cookie sheets. Piped dough that doesn't look neat can be scraped off again and re-piped. If the dough becomes too sticky, refrigerate for 10 minutes. Sprinkle with colored sugar or decorate with candies as desired.

What is the trick to using a cookie press? ›

If it's too cold, it'll be hard to squeeze out of the pres. If it's too warm, it'll be too soft, and it won't hold its shape when baked. Holding your hand on the tube will warm the dough, so try to use just one hand on the trigger – place your other hand on the cookie sheet to keep it from moving.

Why won't my Spritz cookies stick to the cookie sheet? ›

The ungreased cookie sheet must be cold for the dough to adhere. If the dough will not stick to the pan, try placing the cookie sheet in the freezer for a few minutes. Do not use parchment paper or a Silpat mat. The dough will not stick when pressed.

What side of parchment paper do you put cookies on? ›

It is the shiny or glossy side of the parchment paper that should be face up on your baking sheet or cake pan. That way the shiny side can be in contact with your food and make the clean-up easy. As to whether you need parchment, aluminum foil, or wax paper, don't worry, we have you covered.

How to prevent spritz cookies from spreading? ›

Chilling cookie dough helps prevent spreading. The colder the dough, the less the cookies will over-spread into greasy puddles. You'll have thicker, sturdier, and more solid cookies. Whenever I make cookies, I plan ahead and chill the cookie dough overnight.

Why are my Spritz cookies tough? ›

Simply adding the flour to the stand mixer and beating it in runs the risk of overdeveloping gluten and giving you a tough or dense cookie (not what you want after all that work with the creaming). Instead, the best method is to add the flour and mix it in by hand, stopping as soon as no dry flour remains.

What do I do if my spritz cookie dough is too dry? ›

There are a few things you can do to add liquid to your cookie dough if it is too dry and crumbly. One option is to add milk, water, or another liquid until the dough is the right consistency. You can also try adding melted butter or shortening. If your dough is still too dry, you may need to add more flour.

Why are my spritz cookies going flat? ›

Kitchens tend to heat up during any baking extravaganza, meaning the butter you leave on the counter to soften might get too soft. If this happens, the butter will melt faster in the oven and your cookies will flatten before they can set. Thirty minutes is usually enough counter time to soften butter.

Why do my spritz cookies taste like flour? ›

Improper flour measurement is the #1 cause of your cookie dough being too dry or the cookies tasting like flour.

When making spritz cookies do you decorate before or after baking? ›

If decorating with sprinkles or colored sanding sugar, add those as desired before baking. If dipping in melted chocolate, almond bark, or candy melts, do so after the cookies have completely cooled. Top with sprinkles or nonpareils before the chocolate has set. I recommend only baking one sheet of cookies at a time.

Can you use store-bought cookie dough in a cookie press? ›

Loading the Cookie Press

To save time, buy premade cookie dough that comes in a log shape. Avoid using cookie dough that has big pieces like chocolate chips or nuts in it.

Should sugar cookies be baked on parchment paper? ›

Absolutely. We recommend baking sugar cookies (or any cookies!) on parchment paper. Your cookies will bake evenly and our non-stick parchment ensures they will slide off the paper easily without breaking. Each sheet of parchment paper may be used up to three times in the oven.
