The T Light-Rail System

The 26.2-mile T light-rail system runs from the south suburbs and becomes a subway Downtown, then tunnels under the Allegheny River to the North Shore, where it stops at the baseball and football stadiums and Rivers Casino. You can ride around Downtown and the North Shore for free.

Many routes operate 7 days a week, including holidays, from 4 a.m. to 1 a.m. Most run on a 60-minute schedule after 7 p.m. and on Sundays and holidays. Service Alerts: As with most cities, construction, bad weather, and traffic can delay or detour a bus.

Most routes have two time checks, which mark a point the bus must be at, at a certain time. Our schedule operates on departure times, so if a bus gets to a time check early then it cannot leave until the time check is met.

You can purchase fare products at our Downtown Service Center, located at 623 Smithfield St., or at one of many ConnectCard machines or retail locations throughout Allegheny County. Cash fare is also accepted on all of our vehicles.

The Charlie Card actually gets its name from a 1949 campaign song about a man named Charlie who was eternally stuck on the T when he couldn't pay his exit fare (a concept that no longer exists).

PRT fare is $2.75 for unlimited rides within a three hour period. Pay or show your ticket as you enter the bus or the "T" - Pittsburgh's light rail system. Exact change is required when paying with cash as bus drivers do not carry change.

The authority's consultant determined that the average speed for the LRT is 13.7 mph, only slightly faster than Port Authority bus service and slower than comparable systems, which average 16.8 mph. Riders still pay on the train at most stops, and at all stops during nonpeak hours.

How to scan tickets or passes as you board the bus: As you board the bus, a validator near the operator will display an image depicting the barcode scanning. Present your ticket or pass face up, just below the screen, to scan the barcode.

Traveling by bus:

Use the new Tap & Ride option to pay your adult one-way fare on-board most NJ TRANSIT buses using contactless payment cards. As you board, tap your contactless credit or debit card on the on-board validator. Provide the number of zones you wish to travel to the bus operator for the proper fare.
