IN THIS ISSUEFifty and FabulousIt’s hard to believe, but this year marks W’s 50th anniversary. When I was growing up, W was my favorite magazine—I was obsessed with its mix of fashion and culture, and the way it flaunted a rebellious attitude. In 2019, when I became the publication’s editor in chief, the first thing I did was run to the office library and scour the archives. The earliest issues were broadsheets printed on newsprint that tracked the comings and goings of the social swans who were an obsession for W’s founder, John B. Fairchild. Later on, the format changed to the oversize glossy you see now, and fashion became W’s focus. In time, Hollywood, art, and design were added to the mix. This fall, we’re releasing a book with Rizzoli titled Fifty Years Fifty…4 min
IN THIS ISSUEBackstory: The Tiffany LockWhile Tiffany has long been linked to a glamorous sense of nostalgia—in particular, to a certain gamine immortalized in a book and movie bearing the company name in the title, and to its legendary late designers Jean Schlumberger and Elsa Peretti—its offerings have always been inventive and in step with the times. Among Tiffany’s advancements are the discovery and introduction to the jewelry world of gemstones including kunzite, tanzanite, tsavorite, and morganite (named after regular customer and collector J.P. Morgan), and the creation of ingenious hybrid designs that are sold as one piece and can be transformed in multiple ways.Debuting globally in September, Tiffany Lock, a collection of four all-gender bracelets, re-envisions the padlock, an oft-riffed motif from the Tiffany archives, and transforms it into a gleaming symbol of inclusivity.…3 min
IN THIS ISSUEFifty Years, Fifty Moments“This picture tells a story about the ’90s: The fashion is Tom Ford’s first collection for Gucci; the models, Amber Valletta and Shalom Harlow, were best friends. This was my first story for W, and the idea was to go on a road trip following in the footsteps of writers like Jack Kerouac and William S. Burroughs, stopping at all their haunts throughout San Francisco. I was reading a lot of beatnik poetry at the time and wanted to capture a free-spirited feeling, a time and a place that we can all draw inspiration from.” CRAIG MCDEAN, PHOTOGRAPHERPhotographed by Craig McDean; styled by Michel Botbol, September 1995.“We really wanted this shoot to be just about Naomi [Campbell]. She is a timeless beauty, and it was great to pull back and…21 min
IN THIS ISSUESeeing ThingsWolfgang Tillmans credits as his first significant photograph a hard-to-read shot of a young male body—his own. He was 18, a high school student on a monthlong coming-of-age train trip away from his hometown of Remscheid, Germany. On a beach in southwestern France, holding a range finder camera borrowed from his mother and wearing his favorite shorts and T-shirt, he experimented and wound up with a semi-abstract composition in the manner of a Milton Avery painting: a curving patch of pink cotton, the clothing label in white on black trunks, a tan leg stippled with sand, and a mottled brown beach that takes up half the frame.“I was looking at the ocean and had a very acute sense of being, that I am in my body on the earth on…13 min
IN THIS ISSUEMy Life in Parties: Through the DecadesThe 1970s With Stephen Burrows“It was a very creative time, and it was a very inclusive time, different from what it had been before,” recalls designer Stephen Burrows of the decade that made him a star, as he created the look of the disco era with rainbow jersey dresses and lettuce-edge hems. By the time he was 30, in 1973, the Newark, New Jersey, native and Fashion Institute of Technology alum had gone from selling homemade club wear from the basem*nt of a Park Avenue boutique to star billing at Henri Bendel. He was the first Black designer to win a Coty Award, and he stole the show as the youngest of the American contingent at the famous Battle of Versailles, outside of Paris. “It was a great accomplishment for…21 min
