How to apply

1. Review entry requirements and eligibility

  • If you are applying for multiple courses, ensure you have confirmed your preference order. (This applies to all applicants except for Domestic Standard Pathway applicants who are required to apply via GEMSAS).

2. Gather your supporting documentation

As part of your application, you’ll be required to submit:

  • Transcripts and detailed information related to all previous studies you have undertaken and/or completed, including an explanation of the grading system used and official certified English translation of any document that is not written in English.   • Evidence of meeting the University's English language requirements.
  • Evidence of having completed subject prerequisites,

In addition to the above, the following must be submitted for the relevant pathway:

Standard Pathway (Domestic and international applicants):
  • Valid admissions test results:
    • For domestic applicants and international students residing in Australia at the time of application, Graduate Australian Medical School Admissions Test (GAMSAT) results are accepted
    • For international applicants residing outside Australia at the time of application, results from the following tests are accepted:
      • The Graduate Australian Medical School Admissions Test (GAMSAT)
      • The Graduate Medical School Admissions Test (UK GAMSAT)
      • The United States Dental Admission Test (DAT)
      • The Canadian Dental Aptitude Test (DAT)
      • The UK Biomedical Admissions Test (BMAT).
  • If you are a domestic applicant applying for GAM, please gather the relevant supporting documentation required for the appropriate category.
Indigenous Pathway (domestic applicants only):
  • A Confirmation document or a Statutory Declaration supplied to mdhs-indigenous-admissions@unimelb.edu.au to affirm you:
    • are an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person by descent,

  • All communications related to your application, including requests for additional information and application outcomes, will be sent to the email address you registered for your application. To avoid delays, please upload requested information as soon as possible.
  • Please note that the Admissions team will only contact you via email if anything else is needed; there's no need to enquire about the timeline in the meantime.

In the event acceptances exceed the number of places available in the Doctor of Dental Surgery, you will be admitted based on the date of your enrolment.

The Doctor of Dental Surgery has a quota of 98 places available per year based on the availability of dental chairs at the Royal Dental Hospital Melbourne and the Melbourne Dental Clinic. Offers will only remain open as long as there are places still left in the course.

  • First round offers released: October
  • Subsequent offers released: November-December.
  • Deferrals are not possible for the Doctor of Dental Surgery. Successful applicants wishing to defer an offer will need to decline their offer instead and reapply for admission to a future intake.

Clinical placements

Clinical Placements are undertaken as part of this course. All students must undertake a Police Record Check, obtain a Working with Children Check, obtain a First Aid Certificate and comply with immunisation requirements. Refer to the following pages for important information:
