5 Home Storage Trends We're Predicting for 2024 (2024)

Home organization isn't a passing fad. As a professional organizer, the increased interest over the years proves that this trend is here to stay—and for good reason. Studies have shown that being organized leads to better physical and mental health. Plus, cutting down on clutter is statistically shown to save money.

While home organizing itself is a constant need, the way you organize your things tends to change as quickly as home decor trends do. New products come on the market daily and people are continuously reevaluating their homes to make sure it looks and functions to reflect their style and their needs. To keep your space as organized as possible in the new year, myself and two fellow professional organizers are sharing the storage trends we're seeing take off.

1. Showcase Sentimental Items

As an elder millennial, I’ve long rejected the sentimentality associated with material things. However, as I get older and move away from or lose loved ones, I find myself wanting to hold onto sentimental items. But don't just throw these items in a box and hide it away in your basem*nt.

Ryen Toft, owner of Simply Luxe Organizing and brand ambassador for iDesign—the storage product company best known for their collaborative collection with The Home Edit)—predicts that showing off mementos in a “design-friendly” way is something more people will embrace in the coming months.

“I think people will get creative with highlighting these items instead of keeping them tucked away in the attic, garage, or storage space collecting dust,” Toft says. She confesses that it’s hard to see her client’s special souvenirs, family heirlooms, and childhood memories stored away while decor pieces with no sentimental value get to be the center of attention. “It’s time to focus on our roots and display the things that make us feel connected, provide talking points when entertaining, and make us feel like our home has even more meaning," she says.

Here are a few easy ways to do this without creating clutter:

  • Build a shadow box
  • Blend special items in with bookshelf decor
  • Organize photos, newspapers, invitations, etc. into matching albums
  • Keep a pretty box on a console to collect special cards or letters
  • Create a single gallery wall of old family photos or kids' artwork

2. Garage Overhauls

Although sentimental items should never be stored in the garage, many people do—along with many other things. Rachel Whiteaker, owner of The Simple Life and current brand ambassador to The Container Store, has seen a huge uptick in garage organization projects lately. She points out that not only is it a space that neighbors often see, “homeowners are realizing how important and valuable it is to keep their garage from becoming a storage unit," she says.

A garage can (and should!) serve as storage for select items, but it shouldn’t become a dumping ground for clutter. For one, an excess of junk in the garage just makes it harder to find the things you actually need. Plus, storing things like old photos, toys, and clothes in the garage can actually ruin the items. So, consider overhauling your garage in 2024: Take out all the items that don't need to be there, and find storage for them inside. Then, organize the space with the items that are left.

Whiteaker is a big fan of wall organizers, such as pegboards and track systems, since they make use of vertical space. Garage organizers in general should take up as little walk space as possible so you have room to actually park a car there. Families that lack space indoors to have a mudroom or command center can use the garage to set it up and feel much more organized in their daily routines. “Garages are one of our favorite spaces to organize because of the positive impact it has on lives,” Whiteaker says.

3. Space-Saving Products for Staying Put

Just like with the garage, Whiteaker says space-saving storage items are a must around the rest of the home—and they're becoming more popular, especially in small spaces. "With the current market being as it is, more homeowners are waiting it out, putting off moving, and trying to find the best ways to make their homes work in the meantime," she says.

That means more people than ever are being intentional about their storage solutions. If this sounds like you, you’ll want to take a two-step approach: First, pare down (or 'edit,' as Whiteaker calls it) as much as possible so you don’t have more stuff than space. Then, “look for space-saving solutions such as over-the-door racks, slim hangers, and under-bed storage," Whiteaker suggests.

Toft is a fan of using multi-purpose pieces which have a similar effect. You can try out a jewelry armoire hidden behind a mirror or a storage bench at the end of the bed. Or, get creative. “We use our beverage cart as a drop zone by the door during most months, but when the holidays roll around it’s our cart to display our favorite drink, to hold dishes for potluck dinners, and to store guests purses when visiting," she says.

4. Spaces for Self-Care

Speaking of making your home work for you, Toft foresees more people making space to store their self-care essentials. “Wellness, mental health, and self-care have finally broken through stigmas and are common convos now,” she says. Toft explains that during the pandemic, many people embraced the need for self care and picked up products to facilitate it. Now that our lives have picked up speed again, it’s more important than ever to carve out an area that’s quiet and allows you to indulge—without letting your yoga mats, skincare products, and diffusers become clutter.

Toft gives a personal example of how she's embracing this. “We’ve already converted the spare bedroom into an office and the garage into a gym but now it’s time to add a peaceful space to meditate," she says.

If you've acquired more self-care products than you know what to do with, consider creating a space that is both functional and provides storage. Here are a options to consider:

  • Construct a greenhouse or she shed on your property and organize your gardening supplies in it.
  • Carve out a gym in any room of the house and organize your workout gear there.
  • Design your own zen den and deck it out with books, crafts, blankets, and anything else that will help you relax after a long day.

5. Eco-Friendly Organizing Is Here to Stay

Like getting organized itself, striving for sustainable storage solutions is looking less like a trend and more like a permanent mindset. It was a top trend prediction in 2023 as well as in 2022, but it’s worth mentioning again, since sustainability is only becoming more popular.

“Choosing eco-friendly organizing options is still on the rise," Whiteaker says. She sees firsthand that more and more manufacturers are moving toward making their products with renewable and reusable materials. “Many of these products do come with a higher price tag,” she adds, “but they’re often unique, high quality, and long-lasting so they are definitely worth it."

If you don’t want to purchase any new organizing products next year, you can always use what you have. (Which is even more sustainable than buying a new eco-friendly product!) Referencing her bar cart, Toft explains that, “giving multiple uses to items gives more intentional meaning to what you’re keeping in your home and is a more sustainable way to decorate and organize.”
